Championing Children’s Advocacy Services

What Is Children’s Advocacy?

Children’s advocacy is about empowering looked after children and young people to express their views, wishes, and feelings, especially when big decisions are being made about their lives. It’s about creating safe, supportive spaces for them to speak up and speak out, and having someone independent who will stand in their corner.

Our approach is rooted in Issue-Based Advocacy, which ensures that children have dedicated support to speak out on the specific issues affecting them - from where they live to how they are treated and the care they receive. It’s their voice, their story, and their right to be heard.

A Full Range of Specialist Children’s Advocacy Services

Reconstruct offers a comprehensive suite of advocacy services tailored to the diverse needs of children, young people, and families:

  • Care Leaver Advocacy – Supporting young people as they transition out of care, helping them understand their rights, access entitlements, and plan for their futures with confidence.

  • Residential Visiting Advocacy – Regular visits to children in residential care settings to provide consistent, relationship-based advocacy.

  • Non-Instructed Advocacy – For children who cannot clearly communicate their views due to disability, trauma or other reasons. Our advocates use a rights-based approach to ensure their wellbeing and interests are represented.

  • Independent Mental Health Advocacy – For young people detained under the Mental Health Act, our IMHAs provide crucial support in navigating rights, treatment options, and care planning.

  • Parent Advocacy DoLS – Supporting parents where Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) or Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) are being considered, ensuring their voices are heard in decisions about their child’s care.

Why Statutory Advocacy for Children Matters

Every child deserves to be seen, heard, and respected. For looked after children and young people, life can feel like a whirlwind of meetings, professionals, and decisions — often made without their full understanding or input. Advocacy gives them a seat at the table and a voice that carries weight.

In an era where children’s rights advocacy is central to safeguarding and care planning, independent advocacy isn't a “nice to have”, it’s a lifeline. It’s how we challenge injustice, promote wellbeing, and uphold every young person’s right to be involved in decisions that shape their life.
