What Do Independent Visitors Actually Do?
Our Independent Visitors are more than just volunteers they are mentors, listeners, supporters, and most importantly, friends. Their role is simple, but powerful:
BEFRIEND – Visit a child regularly (usually once a month) to get to know them, spend time together, and have fun.
ADVISE – Offer a listening ear and someone to talk to who is completely independent from the local authority.
SUPPORT – Be a consistent adult presence who shows up, sticks around, and builds trust over time — providing consistent adult support for young people.
DEVELOP – Encourage young people to try new things, explore their interests, and build confidence through shared activities.
Every Child Is Different — And So Are Our Visits
At Reconstruct, we know that no two children are the same. That’s why our child-centred approach means adapting our Independent Visitor service to suit each young person’s individual needs, interests, and circumstances.
Whether it's going out for food, playing sport, visiting the cinema, or doing some messy arts and crafts, the focus is always on what the young person enjoys and needs. For many children in care, these visits are a highlight in their month — a moment just for them, with someone they trust.
This service is available for children aged 7 and over (subject to local authority contract agreements), and Independent Visitor referrals can be made by professionals, carers, or the children themselves.
Long-Term Relationships, Real Impact
Young people in care experience a lot of change — new placements, new social workers, new schools. But with Reconstruct’s Independent Visitor programme, they can have the same visitor from childhood through to their 18th birthday. That kind of consistency is rare in the care system, and incredibly powerful.
Time and time again, young people tell us that having an Independent Visitor has helped them feel seen, supported, and valued. It’s more than just fun trips and friendly chats it’s about knowing someone chooses to spend time with you, simply because they care.
Why It Matters
Everyone deserves someone in their corner. For looked after children and young people, an Independent Visitor can be that person a steady presence who celebrates their wins, listens to their worries, and reminds them they’re never alone.
At Reconstruct, we’re proud to deliver this vital Independent Visiting service across the UK, working in partnership with local authorities to create lasting, positive experiences for children in care through trusted local authority Independent Visiting schemes.
