Does your role mean you may have to attend the Court of Protection?

Are you confident you have the skills and knowledge needed to prepare and give good evidence?

As the Mental Capacity Act 2005 continues to embed itself into everyday practice more and more professionals find themselves being called to provide oral evidence in the Court of Protection.

When compared to their peers working in children’s services, attending a court of law is still unfamiliar territory for many adult practitioners, and can cause significant anxiety.

Delivered by a registered social worker with court experience this valuable and practical training will develop knowledge, skills and confidence in all of the following areas:

  • Understanding the different types of evidence
  • Preparing written evidence
  • Preparing for the court experience and managing anxiety
  • Giving oral evidence
  • What to expect after the hearing

The assessment of Prospective Adopters is an essential part of the route to permanency for some children. Assessments must fully explore the suitability of applicants to offer care to a child who may have experienced varying degrees of abuse or neglect. The simple collection of information is not a sufficiently rigorous process to stand up to the scrutiny of an adoption panel; all information needs to be subject to a detailed analysis in terms of its significance to the care of a child. Compliance with agency expectations, relevant legislation and internal quality standards is mandatory.

The training would be advantageous for any person who is currently undertaking adoption assessments or would like to undertake assessments in the future. The course cannot be undertaken in separate units.

This course will consider the present landscape for adoption and the part that robust assessments play in this. The first day will examine best practice is terms of the completion of Prospective Adopter’s reports.

  • Develop an understanding of the legal parameters surrounding adoption
  • The national picture for adoption
  • To explore the key components of completing a Prospective Adopters’ Report (PAR)
  • Gain an understanding of the resources and tools available to support the development of the assessment
  • Understand the importance of analysis and evidence based practice
