If practitioners are to promote the self-esteem of children
and young people who are looked after they need to be
skilled in how to work with issues of identity.This course
enables participants to work pro-actively with cultural
identity and provides a theoretical background to how
children develop a sense of self, gender identity and the
development of racial identity. It considers how all of these
are crucial to the development of positive self-esteem and
demonstrates the relevance of cultural identity to childcare
practice.The training also provides an opportunity for
participants to consider a range of skills and techniques
for working with identity issues.
Learning outcomes cover:
- The concept of identity.
- Knowledge of recent research.
- Institutional racism and the impact on black children
and young people who are looked after.
- Strategies for engaging with and working positively
with black families, children and young people.
- A variety of direct work techniques for working with
identity.
