Emotional abuse is a demanding and sometimes distressing
area of work. Neglectful parents can place a very heavy
demand on services, sometimes with little evidence of
progress. Helpful frameworks, research evidence and
practice tools can help assess the impact and develop
appropriate interventions. Research on neglect has shown
that it is possible to work with parents to address their
own needs and those of their children, but it needs a
co-ordinated and consistent approach from a range of
services. This training aims to raise awareness of the impact
of emotional abuse and neglect on children and to provide
tools and techniques for assessing levels of risk. The course
also offers an opportunity to consider a range of strategies
for working on a multi-agency basis particularly with families
where there is resistance, denial and little or no change.
Learning outcomes cover:
- What is meant by the terms ‘emotional abuse’ and ‘neglect’.
- Recognising the signs and symptoms of emotional abuse
and neglect and understanding the impact on children.
- The issues involved in working together – with parents
and across professional boundaries.
- The impact on individuals of working with emotional
abuse and neglect.
