Since 1995 inspectors have generally acknowledged that
workers are good at gathering information but criticised
them for their lack of analysis. The introduction of the
Assessment Framework did little to address this problem.
By using a stepwise model of assessment which separates
out the six steps of preparation, hypothesising, gathering and
testing information, analysis and planning, this course shows
participants how they should be doing different things
depending upon where they are in the assessment process.
It focuses on four models designed to assess the resilience
of the child, the child’s protective environment, risk and
planning. The course explains the difference between
information and evidence, suggests how participants can
remain up to date with research and helps them produce
shorter, more focused reports.
Learning outcomes cover:
- Current assessment practice (a critical review).
- How to involve children and parents in the process.
- The value and use of ‘evidence based practice’.
- The concept of ‘professional judgement’.
- Tools to aid analysis and understanding.
